GETTING TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
-1 Samuel 16:7 (NKJV)
It is interesting to see that when Samuel was sent to Bethlehem to anoint a new king for the Lord, he was certain that Eliab (David’s oldest brother) was God’s anointed based on appearance and physical stature alone. However, God had refused Eliab and sought out David (the youngest of the eight sons of Jesse) not for his outward appearance or his physical stature, but for his heart.

We spend so much time and money making ourselves presentable to the world by focusing on our outward appearance. As a nation, we spend billions of dollars annually on cosmetic surgery, diets, cosmetics, apparel, and gym memberships. Not only do we give of our money to make our bodies presentable to others, but we also give of our time. We take time agonizing over what clothes we will wear, applying make-up (for some of us women), styling our hair just so and even exercising (not necessarily for health, but to “look” better or to be more attractive to the world). I draw your attention to these things not to condemn them or you, but to put things in perspective. Every day, we spend our money and our time creating a presentable shell for the world to see, but what do we do to prepare our hearts, that they may be presentable to the Lord?

The Lord’s ways are not our own, He sees our heart and is not concerned about our outward appearance. Maybe it’s time we get down to the heart of the matter. Let’s focus on what really matters...our spiritual fitness. When God looks at my heart, I want Him to see potential like He saw in David. I want Him to be able to use me for His purpose and His glory. How about you?
